My family getting its first TV set (before that we listened to programs on the radio). And my parents getting their first automobile (a Nash Rambler -- but my Dad had had a car before he got married).
Before we had a car, we did all our shopping at the corner grocery store, or maybe the drug store with the soda fountain just a few blocks away. There was a mailbox on every other corner. (I only know of less than a dozen in Santa Fe today, and we're big enough for 3 zip code areas!) Mail then meant letters, not just bills and ads. Speaking of Zone Improvement Plan, remember when the postal zone was a 2-digit number between the city and state? And the state was a real name or abbreviation, not a 2-letter code. Our first phone. A black plastic you could hammer nails with. And a rotary dial. Our number was BUtler 5- and 4 other digits I've long since forgotten. We were on a party line, so we had to wait and hear if it was our "ring tone" before we could answer it. |

Ashlar, I'm not sure if we are about the same age, but I remember everything you stated. I remember, you actually were able to have a good time outside, by yourself no less, and it was a treat for you to be able to watch tv, or play a video game. Not a right. swinging on a rope over a limb, and the old tire swing, instead of the $1500 swingsets / forts of today. Geeze, that kinda makes me feel a bit old.

I know I feel old . It seems the only time I see kids on my street is when they are walking to their friends house to play video games .
Back in the day , our parents couldn't get us in the house . Now you can't kids to go outside . Instead of battery operated cars the tots have today , we actually had to pedal ours . I remember cruising up and down the strip/main street through town . Do teens do that anymore ? I remember getting my butt busted by my teacher in school and getting it even worse when I got home for acting up in class. Now they talk about their feelings and get medication .

I certainly do remember the school thing. I had my hide tanned a few times, but not from the principle, it was from the PE teacher, he didn't take any crap. I am sure they still cruise around town, my wifes neice just said last night she was going in town to hang out with some friends in "the lot" that was where I used to hang out after work. Atleast it's outside. We take our kids outside everyday it is nice out. We also refuse to turn "toons" on for them to watch when it is nice out. We get to play catch, or ride bikes or something (My kids are 4 1/2 going on 14, and 2 (umm terrible 2) LOL, but I wouldn't trade it). Atleast the TV and toons / movies are still a treat to them, they must ask before watching them. I got may hide tanned by my parents too, if I did something wrong. I expect my kids to respect their elders, and family. I don't agree with all of the Politically Correct mumbo jumbo of today. I also will make sure my kids know the value of a day's labor too, not a handout and expections of more. That's the way I learned, that's the way I want to teach them.

I have to agree , My niece was staying with my Mom ,I stopped by and she was in the house on the computer , I told her to help Mom do yard work . She asked how much we were going to pay her because she didn't work without being paid . I said you'll get paid by me not swatting your hindend .

I remember going to see Ghost Busters in a drive in movie theater.
Good Cartoons before and after school, and Saturday mornings. Getting cable for the first time. An Atari was hi-tech. Cutting out little side pieces of floppies so you can copy them. Wood burning stove. |
