How have you been asked if you are a Mason.

I have had Brother Masons aproach and say " I see you are also a travling man"
I see you have been to the East.
How old is your GrandMother?
The interesting one A brother approached and stated " I see you have a spider on you. From whence did you get it"
I did not know how to answer this one but it is replyed with " I recieved it while lying amongst the rubble of King Solomans Temple"
Just wondering what others have been asked because some are interesting. I had a Brother begin to tell me a story about his grandmother and her little dog. As he told his story he gave all the signs--EA FC MM-- was a good story but I cannot remember the whole thing.

I have heard or been asked some of the above questions posted . Traveling man is the one I have heard the most . I have heard others but never gave them much thought as I tend to let them go in one ear and out the other .I have heard some that was a little to on the nose and does not need to be said in public and I have kept on walking as if I never heard the person who said them to me . May sound rude of me , but some Brothers need to keep in mind that we are in a public setting amongst non-Masons .

I once was shopping with the wife and I heard some older Brother yell at me in the STORE , "Yeah there , GMHA ! I have long since......" (Master Masons can finish the rest) .And when I say "yell" , I mean he yelled it ! I cringed and the wife asked if he was talking to me ? I said no , must be someone else , just keep on walking .

I have heard a lot of the same ones you have mentioned, like you Ashlar the traveling man is the most common. I did have a brother ask me if I had been beaten by three bad men, that lead into an interesting talk with him.

Traveling man has got to be the #1... there is a book called "Catch-a-chism"... I believe it has several of those type questions...I have a few Brothers that call me Hiram everytime they see me.... where I live, we dont have alot of these types of acknowlegments...I get "seasoned" Brothers that will walk by me and give me a nod...I guess they see the ring on my hand and figure not many wear a ring on the right hand...???

LOL , "I had been beaten by three bad men" now I have never heard that one before !

When it comes to this type of stuff , you will have to look past me , I tend to be somewhat of a hard a$$ concerning what should be said , how it should be said and when it should be said in public .

I like.... "Hey...are you a Mason"??... thats the simplest to me. Unless I am already talking to someone, I wouldnt notice if someone asked me a question on the sly....

Thats a good one! But would all masons understand that if a complete stranger approached and asked you that?

I've been here before
I use some form of traveling man myself and that is the one I hear the most as well. It's pretty versatile and can be answered in so many ways. It doesn't matter too much, five minutes of talking to a person claiming to be a Brother and you can tell if they're legit!

Here in California we are warned about giving the signs in public, even if used as part of a cover story. I've had many men from other parts of the country greet me as "Hiram"; once in a business meeting full of non-masons. Everyone had a funny look on their face trying to figure out why the gentleman had called me "Hiram", knowing what my name was.

I have been called a "Square" in public .That one left me scratching my head as I always thought myself to be "cool" in my laid back , country sort of way .

Calling someone a "square" could have a negative meaning to people from certain generations..... "Being a square" used to mean something aloing the lines of a geek.....

You mean like; "Don't be a square Daddy O" ?

You could always respond; "It's Hip to be Square" ;)

Wow...

I have been a MM for less than 2 months and I, probably like most brothers before me, went out and bought my Blue Lodge S&C car emblem like a proud member of one the best organizations in the world. Needless to say I was approached by Brother who I knew and he asked me what’s that on the back of my car. Fellow MM knows the rest, but less than 2 months of being raised I was caught off guard and was given more light on the spot. Now that I'm hearing the different catechisms, I have to seek others for more light. There is nothing like being part of something bigger than you and not being able to talk about it with others because you are just happy to belong.

Was at a reunion this weekend for the Valley of Allentown and I asked several of the brothers including three 33's if they ever heard "How old is your grandmother?", and all I got was strange looks and blank stares.
I wish someone would elaborate, because I don't have a clue what this refers to, but keep in mind, this is a public forum.

If asked "How old is your grandma ?" , You would answer by your lodge name and NUMBER . or just the lodge number . Either way , unless it is a lodge in my area , I would still have no idea where you are from . But normally , most will add their District and Grand Lodge to clarify things .

As I said earlier , I just let my wife answer for me when I am asked this and she is with me , makes Brothers do a double take .
