Not going to go into details, since I don't want this to seem as if I'm bashing those organizations as a whole, but I've finally pulled the plug on my Council and Commandery dues.

Two years of never getting a single communication that wasn't a dues notice, never even getting a dues card for either, and having repeated requests for same ignored pushed too far. I can't look my wife in the eye and say I'm going to spend the dues monies.

Chapter stays, but Council and Commandery had to go.

Sad state of affairs. Regardless of the organization, sometimes these things happen.

The odd thing is that Commandery, at least, doesn't seem to care. My father's WM of our Lodge, and had occasion to talk to the secretary for Commandery. His concerns are the same as mine- he rejoined Commandery at the same time I joined, and has the same problems with no dues card, no notices, no Maltese Cross, and so on.

Upon telling the secretary he was going to demit unless something was done, the secretary did the unthinkable.

Nodded and said "Okay."

What? You don't do that. You do that too long, you cease to exist, and with a Commandery that is hard-pressed to have the 8 needed for a stated meeting, it's not as if they have the members to spare.

Is there not anything that can be done at a higher level than the Commandery? I'm not a YR Mason, so please pardon my ignorance.

I'm sorry to hear the state of your organizations Bro. Casey. We have the same secretary for all three bodies, and between postcards, emails, facebook, and announcements given in lodge and at Shrine Club meetings, I feel sufficiently notified and extremely guilty when I fail to show up.

Should be able to contact the District Deputy Grand Commander, and he should be able to address these concerns. It's unfortunate that it has gotten to that point, but the overall thread is absolutely correct. If it continues on that path, there won't be anything left.

I have seen a small lodge go to ruin over a bad Secretary . I realize this is not the York Rite , but along the same lines . The Secretary (or Recorder in this case ) can make or break a lodge . It sounds like this Recorder needs to be removed from his office .

Is it a matter of the the Bodies ( whatever they may be) having a large enough membership that they dont care if one demits or not?

Sounds like it. it's either that, or you've got some really inflated ego's in office for sole purpose of being big shots with no brains. Shoddy operations.

While this is sad, and no organization should try and deter Brothers, I've known some people who have been over loaded in some situations. Two years is a bit extreme for that, but I've seen some people put into positions they are not familiar with, and that position has suffered. I've also seen far more cliques then I care to have seen in my life time. Certain groups, clubs, committees, etc.. just do not want to see other people join.

Sadly, these two things, especially combined, are bad for our organization. I wish they did happen, but they do. You never know who you are loosing. I do wish you in your future endeavors. Hopefully things will change in the future for the better.

If they think that they are in that situation, they have a bigger problem than I previously thought. A Brother in my Lodge is a member of that Commandery, and says they have many nights where they cannot actually meet- don't have the 8 present for a properly constituted meeting.

Their rolls may be huge- they used to give out life memberships like lollipops- but one has to wonder how long they can last like this.

Sad thing is that my father used to love Council as much as Chapter. He's been WM, PHP and PIM, and has been asked more than once to complete the cycle and go for Commander. As it is, though, he demitted the same day I did.

Should be interesting to see if I get a phone call. The letter I sent went to the Commandery secretary, who is Recorder for Council as well, and detailed my issues with both. Odds that I get a call back?

I have not. Chapter I pay up cheerfully, but I may do just that for Council and Commandery.

Looks like someone got a shoutout:
Freemasons For Dummies: "I Resign"
Yes, "they" sure did!

The thing to really draw attention to this is that Bro. Casey needs to, and should have simultaneously sent his demit and comments to the Grand line as well. I would have also let the Commandary and Council know that I had done just that. If their "give a damn" is busted, the Grand line should fix it post haste.

Why throw a firecracker in the bathroom to just make noise when you can put a cherry bomb in the toilet and blow it up!

In days of old, when Work was completed or unsupport, Masons closed down their Lodge and moved to where their Craft was both needed and supported.

Why are we so resistant to this elegance? Is there not sense in such discipline? Does such raw and focused Power intimidate us? Do we not dirty the very thing we made effort to Build by our efforts to resist such simple executive Beauty?

Kudos for moving on my Brother. Your Work there is done. Your skill is needed elsewhere.

Interesting view my Brother.

First of all let me say I am GUILTY AS CHARGED with what I am about to say/ask....

Do we join to many "groups" and spread ourselves thin when there is plenty of work to do in our Lodges...???....All to often, I hear and read about Brothers joining this and that but have not stepped foot in their Lodge since being raised...(this part I can say I have not fallen into)....

As far as those groups not including you, me or anyone else...my thoughts are...hey it is your loss if you dont want to include me,... you dont know what you are missing out on...
