Members of the Grand Lodge of Colorado A.F. & A.M. conducted a ceremonial cornerstone ceremony Friday at the newly expanded primary school building. Masons from lodges located around the state of Colorado participated in the Sept. 14 ceremony.
Because of their heritage as builders of cathedrals and other public structures, the Freemasons have historically performed a special ceremony at the laying of cornerstones for new buildings.
The cornerstone ceremony is an ancient tradition popular in the United States since the colonial days. The modern ceremony has changed little since George Washington laid the cornerstone of the Capitol building with full Masonic honors and ceremonies. The cornerstone laying ceremony symbolically uses the tools of the operative Mason to bring a special message of faith in the craftsmanship of a new building.
