Default Masonic time capsule yields 'goop,' coins

A time capsule planted nearly 100 years ago and opened yesterday in Dartmouth revealed a whole lot of "goop" and five corroded coins.

"When they were talking about an iron box in concrete, with paper in it, I was expecting to find pretty much what we found," conservator Julia Landry said.

"Concrete is porous, and iron will disintegrate when wet, so with the freezing and the thawing and the condensation, the box just disintegrated."

The capsule was entombed in 1909 in a large concrete block at the former home of the Masonic Hall at the corner of Ochterloney and Wentworth streets. The building was torn down a couple of weeks ago to make way for the Founders Corner condos and Nectar restaurant.

Terry Brennan, president of developer Nova New England, said he promised the Masons that workers would use "due diligence" in dismantling the historic building's foundation, in hopes of finding the time capsule.
