One of the most recognized symbols of Shriners’ work with crippled and burned children will take form as a statue outside the New Bern Sudan Shrine center this month.
The statue takes three-dimensional form from a 1970 photograph showing a Shriner carrying a little girl in one hand and her crutches in the other. The picture was called “Editorial WithoutWords,” by photographer Randy Dieter, who was covering an annual Shriners’ outing for handicapped children at an amusement park in Evansville, Ind. The New Bern statue is made of fiberglass and stands 10 feet tall. It was produced by a Florida company. A dedication ceremony is planned for the afternoon of Jan. 26, following the Shriners’ annual parade and luncheon, part of the Winter Ceremonial. Shriners plan statue in New Bern - Sun Journal |
