THE VILLAGES — Shriners are proud of the Shriners Hospitals for Children, a network of 22 health care facilities that treat children for orthopedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries, and cleft lip and palate.
“We’re famous,” said Bob Stines, The Villages Shrine Club president, “for orthopedic and burn treatment.”
All of this care is provided free of charge.
The Shriners’ task of supporting the hospitals is taxing. It costs more than $1 million per day to maintain the health care network. Because they are focused on improving the lives of children, the Shriners take on fundraising with gusto.
“All the money (we raise) goes to the hospitals,” said Stines, a Village of Glenbrook resident, “for the children to get medical treatment.”
The Shriners’ Paper Crusade, conducted every October, is the group’s largest fundraising endeavor. A supplemental crusade is helpful, too.
