| Masonic Mafia | Jason , I take it that to set up and run this forum you must be fairly knowledgeable about computers ? I have a question for you or anyone else who can answer . When my old desktops used to start slowing down and acting sluggish I would save pictures , music and other important files and recovery them back to factory about once a year .They would once again run like new . I have had this laptop for about 2 years and have never recovered it . I keep all the junk files cleaned out of it and keep the registry cleaned up and I keep an eye on my RAM usage (it has way more than enough RAM) etc; etc; , but it is just not acting right . It's sluggish , programs that used to open in a blink of an eye now takes a while to open completely with a few other small problems . So my question is , is it a good thing to recovery them regularly to factory settings ? Or does this do any harm ? I have a little knowledge of computers , but I am far from an expert .

![]() | It has been years since I worked as a computer tech. I do not believe it will cause any harm. I usually do a factory recovery about every two years. You could try over at Tech Support Forum and see if anyone has ideas to help speed it up. Personally, I go the easier route and just save data and restore to factory. Seems so much easier then fighting with it.

![]() | Ashlar521, if you go to pcpitstop.com you can run a diagnostic on your machine. It will give you hints and tips to help speed up your machine. (registration is free for basic services and they will maintain a record of your computer for future tests) Also with the regular cleanings you do I would suggest you download and run a program called Spybot search and destroy ( free version) Do a full sweep about once a month and it will find things that your anti virus misses. People on line a lot don't realize sometimes what they pick up and have hidden in their registries and hard drives. Hope this helps. |

| Masonic Mafia | Thanks , but I'll just back everything up on my portable hard drive and do a factory restore , it's due anyway . I already run my own spyware of choice program and I keep my registry clean . I tried pcpitstop , it says my computer is running fine , when I know it is not . But again , thanks .
