Default Shriners annual parade provides downtown extravaganza

Saturday’s Sudan Shriners parade in downtown New Bern returns to its old route along Broad Street after a one-year change due to street construction.
The parade is annually the centerpiece public event for the Shriners Winter Ceremonial, which brings thousands of Shriners and families to town. Also on Saturday, the Shriners will select their new potentate, who will make his first public appearance at the parade.
“It will be another fine show,” said Shriner Buddy Shaw of Goldsboro, who has been the parade unit director for a decade.
New Bern is home base for the 42-county Sudan Shriners, among the six largest Shrine centers in North America with more than 6,000 members.
