![]() | CHICAGO -- Dale McDowell and Russell Anderson drive west with the sunrise at their backs, a few sleepy passengers riding silently with them. They know the trip through toll road booths and beneath Chicago's skyline well. It's one their vans take two to three times a week and one McDowell and Anderson take a few times a month. This time they are taking an 18-year-old Amish girl for surgery at Shriners Hospitals for Children in Chicago, one of 22 Shriners hospitals that offers pediatric health care at no cost to patients. The Chicago hospital specializes in orthopaedics, spinal cord injury and cleft lip and palate. Shriners also transport patients to the burn unit at Shriners Hospitals for Children in Cincinnati. "We never know how long it's going to take," McDowell said. "The kids are up here for their doctor's appointment, and that's what's most important. We'll get home when we get home."
