Default Maintenence Free Yard?

Is there any kind of grass which only grows 5-6 inches? I swear, I have mowed my lawn two times a week since this summer began. We have had so much rain that I think I can see the dratted stuff grow. I've seriously thought about taking it all up and planting English ivy. Are y'all having a hard time keeping the yard trimmed this year?

I seem to have to mow more this year than the past, but we have had more rain and the grass grows like crazy. I have a friend who planted his yard to buffalo grass, it is drought tolerant, needs less water and grows less than 6 inches per year. It is more of a light pale green not a nice deep green as Kentucky Blue Grass, but I think I could live with that if I only had to mow 2 or 3 times a summer. Also think of the savings in water and gas for your mower. Other choices -- artificial turf comes to mind.
My Grandmother lived in T or C, New Mexico, they had rocks instead grass and cactus instead of trees in their yard, they also had water restrictions, no watering your yard, you could only was your car when it rained, etc.

I used to put down summer rye grass here. Huge mistake. Would have to mow twice a week sometimes. I have heard of people using moss in place of grace. A lot easier to maintain.

We also have people who have gravel/rock yards here. Just get some good weed spray.

I am , but I have a lawn boy take care of my yard . We have had a lot of rain the last two weeks and my yard looks like a hay field because it rains just enough to where the grass is too wet to mow .
