I love The Simpsons. But to be honest, I don't think the ahow was ever targeted towards kids, although some over the messages from certain episode can teach a lesson. It was always an evening show where parents could monitor if kids watch or not.

If one finds something offensive or inappropriate , then either change channels or turn off the TV , but do not censor TV for everyone else because one does not like the content of the show .
I agree completely. If you do not like it you have control to turn it! Wish more people would do the same instead of complaining about it! I do not think children should watch this show or others mentioned, but adults have the ability to change and know what is offensive to them for any reason.

I can't agree more with you. Just because a program is not appropriate for your children doesn't mean it is not appropriate for other people. Moreover, it takes much less work to change the channel or turn off the television than to complain about that.

When I was growing up, my Dad and I would watch Popeye cartoons together. Later in life I started to understand why he would laugh at different parts than I did. The Simpsons certainly doesn't have the subtlety of the older cartoons but I don't see Bugs Bunny, Road Runner or many of the classics because people think they were too violent for kids. Every generation complains.

The Simpsons are probably tame enough that I'd probably let an 8 or 9 year old watch em... I mean, Grampa Simpson is a Mason....

but seriously... I would much rather have my (hypothetical) child watching The Simpsons than say, i dunno... pretty much anything else on tv these days. i live near an elementary school, and I've heard the kids talking about watching stuff like Jersey Shore...

If your kid doesn't have the automatic distaste for anything black and white, they should be watching all the old Charlie Chaplin, Danny Kaye, Buster Keaton stuff. I know I loved that stuff as a kid, and there was enough back catalog to keep me busy until I was old enough for the "harder stuff".

But I do remember my father almost having a heart attack one saturday morning when I was watching Shining Time Station... Knowing what i do now, I understand too... I would probably do a major double take if MY 5 year old was watching a show with George Carlin in it! *edit* ok, i'd probably double take for 2 reasons there...

I love The Simpsons, although I have been disappointed with many of the newer episodes. Just seems like they are doing whatever they can or want to just to be on the air. It's had a nice long run, but I wish they could either make better new episodes or just stop and not ruin a classic.

I must disagree, and at the same time partially agree, and please do not take offense to me quoting you, because im just using it as an example of all the other same opinions in this thread.

South Park I personally think is utter garbage, I do not understand how some intelligent people i know can actually love the show. Its so stupid.

Family guy crosses the line every now and then too, but there is alot of truth coming out of the show.

THe problem is not TV, its how the kids are taught by the parents. Children should be able to see, and learn about Body parts at a very young age, and also hear profane language, and be taught not to use that language and why it is bad.

Sweden is a great example of this. Yes its model socialist country, but freedom of speech is 100% allowed, and so is nudity on TV. Yet , bad language is not common talk in sweden in public like it is in america. Saying words like...excuse me. :"F**k" is very offensive to alot of people in public, and is considered very rude. People would actually stare at you like you are a barbarian of some sort, yet this language is common on public TV, and so is nudity. Its all how your kids are taught growing up. Yes, the younger population is more openly sexually active than americans, and 18 is the legal age to drink. But there is more behind close doors sexual activity in America, and the stuff that goes on is 10 times worse than sweden. Its common sense. If you tell a child something is bad, and dont give him any reason as to why, or show him an example, than he will only see it as something that is not so bad, and you are just being stupid. Put if you take the time out and tell him/her why, and show an example as to what happens to people who use foul language all the time, then they will be far less likely to want to use the language when they grow up
