![]() | The Nassau County Commission voted unanimously earlier this month to lease a former Health Department building to the Fernandina Beach Shrine Club. Commissioners Walter Boatright and Danny Leeper are both Shriners. The leased property, located at 1015 South 14th St., is the former headquarters of the Environmental Health division of the Nassau County Health Department. The commission voted to lease it to the Fernandina Beach Shrine Club as a headquarters for five years at $1 per year - a move that would allow the club to pursue its charitable works more effectively, said attorney Clyde Davis, representing the Shriners. "Shriners Hospitals for Children is a system of hospitals throughout the United States," he said. "... Children up to the age of 18 suffering from orthopedic conditions, burns or cleft palates are eligible for care with no obligation for payment. "Here in Nassau County, 20 to 25 Nassau County children are treated in Shriners hospitals every year," he added. "It is appropriate for this piece of property to be used by an organization that in turn provides so much benefits to our children." more Fernandina Beach, FL, News-Leader newspaper.
