Default Alexandria marks start of work on Masonic Drive

City officials, as well as those from the Greater Alexandria Economic Development Authority, held a ground-breaking ceremony Wednesday morning near the Alexandria Tennis Complex to highlight the start of construction.
Clifford Moller, executive director of the development authority, said he and his board members have been "behind this project for about four years."
The vision for the Masonic Drive corridor is to become a recreational and commercial hub, taking advantage of city-owned assets such as the Alexandria Zoo, City Park, Bringhurst Field and Bringhurst Golf Course along Masonic Drive between Lee Street and Texas Avenue. The city committed $2 million under its Specially Planned Activity Redevelopment Corridors, or SPARC, initiative for the corridor.
Roy O. Martin III, a GAEDA board member, said Alexandria has "so many special spots."
"This is a great day for Alexandria right now," he said, "and I'm really happy to be a part of it."
