Default Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl is more than a football game

HANOVER — Sure, this afternoon's 55th annual Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl is a football game.

Graduated seniors from New Hampshire and Vermont will take the field and play their final high school game. After the spectacle at Dartmouth College, some of the players will go on to college to continue their careers. For others, this afternoon's 2:30 kickoff will be their last chance to shine.

But the Shrine Bowl, a fundraiser that has raised more than $5 million for crippled and burned children throughout New England and Canada, is much more than a football game.

That notion wasn't lost on some of the local players, who were collectively taken aback after visiting patients of the Springfield Shriners' Hospital in Springfield, Mass., last Sunday.
