A 'penny from Paris' discovered

A Caviness woman hopes a penny coin dating to 1855 is authentic and some coin collector might know its value and history.

Dottie Pomroy of Caviness said she took a good look at the Layfayette Mason coin recently after having it tucked away in a safe for the past 20 years.

“It came from a garage sale in a box of assorted items,” Pomroy said late last week. “It was in a little snap coin purse containing other coins, some foreign along with some buffalo head nickels.”

The coin, which appears to be made of copper, bears a Layfayette inscription on its face and several Masonic symbols on its flip side.
