Greetings Brothers. I am please to say that I have opened the lodge in the Tyler position. This was a great expereince in that I truly felt what it meant to be the keeper of secrets so to speak. I had but 1-2 parts that I needed to know, but to me they were they most imporatnt parts I had to say since becoming a MM. As a newly raised MM in my lodge, I still feel the need to show and prove to the brothers that I am not comfortable with just belonging to a lodge. Can anyone relate to that experience?

Yes. I can relate. Congrats on your new post. Keep in mind that tylers often keep that position for a very, very long time.

With an attitude like that, you may never sit inside the lodge again. ;)

My Lodge's tyler has had the position since 1995 (no kidding, its on the wall ).
reminds me of the Abbot and Costello show where they forget Costello in the WW I trench for 10 years.....

Simply just talk to the WM, he will listen and work with you to hopefully find a different place/station.

As a new Master Mason, I'm surprised they stuck you outside the door. Generally, that's a position given to one of the older brothers who have held other positions in the past.

One would think that if they were going to offer you a position, it would be as a steward. This way you could see what is going on in Lodge. How are you supposed to learn the ritual, etc. if you can't see, and be part of it?

I'm not trying to take the wind out of your sails. The Tyler is an important job. I commend you for accepting the position. I would just make sure the WM, and the next in line for his spot know that you aren't going to be a permanent fixture there.

Unless, of course, you just LOVE being Tyler. I have met the occasional Brother who dotes on the position, and if that is you, then hold on tight. A terrific Tyler is hard to come by.

The Tyler only goes to old Past Masters in my lodge .

Well, it doesn't usually go to PM's in mine. We had one member who never wanted to go through the chairs, but he seemed to like being Tyler. He held that post for years. As he's gotten older and is no longer able to attend Lodge as frequently as he did once, others go into the post for a year or two and then rotate out. I've never sat as Tyler, who knows, maybe someday a Master will ask me to do that position ... hmm.

He is PM & he acted as WM for my EA. I was quite pleased with that.

There is a brother in my lodge who has been a Mason for 51 years and has held an office for 48 of those years. He has held every office except Sec. & Treas. He has held the Tyler's chair for over 20 years.

Believe me he is, just ask him how he is and he will tell you every ailment he has ever had.:D:D But he is still a good Mason.

I've done the Tyler position a few times, but they usually allow me to Tile from within. The best thing I think is I was SC for my brothers Raising which was my first time playing a part, along with catcher. I am making plans for learning 3rd base on the MM degree.

Congratulations on setting in the East for the upcoming year. It is indeed an honor to be elevated above your brethren for a time. Best of luck.

My buddie and I were raised the same day almost 2 years ago. This year he will be SW and I will be JW. As far as Tylers go, I have heard some lodges make the PM do that.
