OK...so my wonderful kids got me a snazzy new laptop for Christmas....it has Windows 7....when I log on to this site, I get two black spaces about 1.5 inches wide one each side of the web page......this is the only site so far that this happens on....the screen kinda looks like when you have a HD TV but the channel isnt in HD...ya know where it doesnt fit the screen...... I know some of you techies know how to fix this....
Just hazarding a guess: Look at the page code for those two places to see if a plug-in or driver is required.
????.....I go into burning buildings for a living...LOL...can you say lost ball in high weeds when it comes to computers....
I thought the webpage was supposed to look like that. It always has on mine... I've got an old Acer 2420 running Windows XP Service Pack 2 S&F
My computer does that too. I use the settings at the top of the page and just zoom in. For me (using the Chrome internet browser by Google) it only affects this page. All other pages are still at 100% and I keep this one at 120%. It still has a black bar on the sides but it is smaller. (Zooming in any farther makes the page too large for the screen and I have to start scrolling horizontally.)
I did... The visible potion of the page is always trying to take up 980 pixels in your browser. The "black" boarders should be dark brown. If you zoom or resize the window so it takes up 980 pixels, you lose the boarders. If you maximize the window, the visible portion of the page stays the same size and the boarders grow. I think your new laptop just has a better graphics system than your old (Fred Flintstone era?) computer. There really isn't a problem, it's just the design of the page. I think it's nicely done, btw. I'm my Lodge's webmaster and write web sites as part of my job (Database Administrator).
control + is the easiest way to zoom in and control - to zoom out. mine has the same thing on my laptop as well. I just kinda ignore it
Your new screen has a lot more horizontal viewing area than you old scree. Most pages are designed to work with 640X480 viewing monitors (so's not to need to scroll left and right to view a single page). Most new computers go way beyond that (1028 and beyond) for side to side viewing. The browser centers the viewing area and blank area is no big deal. You are OK. Please come down from the ledge, sir, so we can talk inside!!!
Yes , my laptop is widescreen and I have the black bars on the sides of mine also . I leave it as is , I have super glasses and do not zoom him .
shhhhhoooooooo.......................Thanx Brother...it was getting a bit un-nerving for at least 3 or 4 seconds....I wasnt sure if I had done something to change the size or what....it isnt a big deal....just my OCD kicking in when I had the laptop and PC on the same page and they looked a bit different............... Coooooooool....did you see the squirrels.....
I don't think there ever was a problem Coach. It was just that the new laptop had better video/display capabilities and shrunk his field of view.
I didn't spend a whole lot of time reading the source of the page, but this line defines the layout of the table that contains the heading, links, navigation, etc.: <table border="0" width="980" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" align="center"> the "boarder=0" prevents a line from being drawn around the screen. "width=980" is the number of pixels the table will be. Anything wider than that gets the dark background color of the page. "cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"" make all the other stuff line up with no gaps. And the important one, "align=center" plops the good stuff in the middle of your browser window. The background color is defined elsewhere and I didn't bother looking for it. It looks black on my work computer and dark brown at home... Bottom line... you have a nicer computer now
Yea Coach..... it turned out to be a none issue....Thanks everyone Windrider & GaryE....I think you guys hit the nail on the head.
Hey! I just noticed that I have these big black bars on the side of my screen here! j/k It's always been like that here for me, I just figured it was supposed to be that way. I was following this thread closely to see if there was a setting I had wrong. Should have figured it was because of my wide monitor. Duh!
Wide screen on my laptop didnt even enter my mind....I figured I had hit some "F"key that changed my screen.....
That's why you guys keep us Gnerds around. This reminded me of an old nerd joke: There are a group of people in a helicopter flying around when a thick fog sets in. The pilot is totally lost and disoriented when he sees lights ahead. He cautiously flys to the lights and sees a tall building. Using his PA system, he asks the folks in the building, "Where am I?" The helpful people in the building take a white board on wheels over to the window and write on it, "In a helicopter". The pilot set his course and flys safely to the airport to the gratitude of his passengers. After they land, one of the passengers asks how he knew where he was from that stupid answer. The pilot said, "They gave me a completely correct and totally useless answer. It had to be the Mircosoft building."
