The one voice that won't be hushed in the Ashburton Public Library is that of its new defibrillator, which instructs people how to use it.

The Ashburton community was given the gift of a life-saving defibrillator on Saturday, courtesy of the local Freemasons who donated the heart jump-start.

The defibrillator will be kept at the public library where staff are trained in its use.
Chairman of the Ashburton Masonic Hall Committee Roger Paterson said Erewhon, Methven, Thistle, Harmony and Ashburton Masonic Lodges took up the challenge to fund the acquisition of a defibrillator for the Ashburton community after Ashburton Public Library's head librarian Jill Watson suggested the library would be an accessible place to keep the life-saving device.
Mr Patterson said Freemasons had also worked to raise funds to fit every ambulance and emergency response vehicle throughout New Zealand with a GPS unit.
Master of Harmony Lodge Alan Keith said 41 people attended the local Freemason's Longest Morning Tea event at the Ashburton Masonic Centre on Saturday.
The event saw Freemasons tip their teacups from the North Cape to Bluff and Mr Keith said Lodges from the Ashburton area had raised $120 from donations, which would go to the New Zealand Cancer Society.
