HAVERHILL — A former officer of a Haverhill Masonic lodge admitted yesterday to embezzling more than $60,000 from the group over a five-year period.

Richard MacInnis, 53, who now lives in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., entered a plea of guilty to 15 counts of embezzlement and two counts of felony larceny during a hearing in Salem Superior Court.

Judge Howard Whitehead sentenced MacInnis to two years of probation, and ordered him to pay $60,000 in restitution to the Haverhill Knights Templar.

The people who operate MORI (the masonic bookkeeping system for lodge secretaries and grand lodge officers used by several GLs) told us in a briefing 2-3 years ago, that the only lodges with embezzlement problems were in grand lodges that did NOT require 2 officers (Secretary AND Treasurer) to approve all vouchers before payment.

As a result of this and other issues, The GL of MA requires not only two officers to sign off on expenditures, two new offices were created: Assistant Secretary and Assistant Treasurer. Unfortunately, this doesn't apply to the appendent bodies.

We have an audit of both lodge and corporate accounts every 6 months. Thus far, we have had no issues.
