Principal John Autry had invited some local Masons out for the stone's removal because the Masonic symbol of a square and compasses was carved into one side.

Their inclusion turned out to be providential when a time capsule placed in 1925 by members of the Red Fork Masonic Lodge was discovered.

"It was an untold mystery to us," said Eddie Creekpaum, a Mason and retired Tulsa school administrator.

"Obviously, the people that put that in there are all deceased. The guy who taught me my Masonic work was pushing 100, and that was back in 1962. I feel like he would have known."

School officials removed the cornerstone to prepare for the demolition of the former Clinton Middle School.

A new building is set for completion in time for the start of classes in August.
