Masonry can trace its history back for centuries, beginning with early stonemasons – whose roots are still evident in the Masonic square and compass symbol used by lodges throughout the world. Many of these stonemasons were the builders of the great cathedrals throughout Europe.

One modern-day lodge is Webster Lodge No. 98 A.F. & A.M., located on East Washington Street in downtown Marshfield.

Webster Lodge No. 98 can trace its history back to 1858 when, on May 28, the lodge was chartered.

In looking at the history of freemasonry in Missouri, it is also of note that the Grand Lodge of Ancient and Free and Accepted Masons of the state was established the same year that Missouri became a state, 1821.

Formal organization into Grand Lodges was a system first begun in England in the early 1700s and was carried into America by the earliest settlers. All subsequent lodges organized in Missouri have been chartered by the Missouri Grand Lodge.

Twenty-three charter members of the fraternity signed a petition to the Missouri Grand Lodge in 1857, which requested that a lodge be established in Marshfield.
