Words: Pilaster

"It was supported by fourteen hundred and fifty-three columns, and two thousand nine hundred six pilasters, all hewn from the finest parian marble."

Oh, cool! I get to use the same quote twice in a row.

There's columns, and there's pilasters; related, but with specific differences.
Also related would be "canton." :evillaugh:
[though I do not believe it appears in Masonry]

A pilaster is a type of column built into (integral part of) or against a wall. It is not free-standing like a column and receives some lateral support from the wall. A pilaster might also be used to stiffen thinner walls. It is seen as a thickened 'column-like' portion of the wall on one or both sides.

Aren't they partial columns?
Sorry, Brother Duncan, close, but not close enough.

A column built into the wall is the correct answer!
It does not have to be a weight-bearing structure; it can be merely decorative.
