"Vital Signs" by RUSH:

Unstable condition
A symptom of life
In mental and environmental change
Atmospheric disturbance
The feverish flux
Of human interface and interchange

The impulse is pure
Sometimes our circuits get shorted
By external interference
Signals get crossed
And the balance distorted
By internal incoherence

A tired mind become a shape-shifter
Everybody need a mood lifter
Everybody need reverse polarity
Everybody got mixed feelings
About the function and the form
Everybody got to deviate from the norm

An ounce of perception
A pound of obscure
Process information at half speed
Pause, rewind, replay
Warm memory chip
Random sample, hold the one you need

Leave out the fiction
The fact is, this friction
Will only be worn by persistence
Leave out conditions
Courageous convictions
Will drag the dream into existence

A tired mind become a shape-shifter
Everybody need a soft filter
Everybody need reverse polarity
Everybody got mixed feelings
About the function and the form
Everybody got to elevate from the norm...

Those that have completed their FC work should get this...

What are your thoughts? What do the lyrics say to you? Gibberish? I certainly hope not...

I see several things. Looking at it from a Mason's view, It speaks of changing the way you think (polarity), it alludes to winnowing on the Threshing floor, and most of all it speaks of rhetoric and the lack of some to use it effectively.

I'll go back and highlight key phrases and words that I found interesting. We can discuss more that way.

As a side note, I'm a HUGE RUSH fan. As a drummer, I've always liked Neil Peart. I'm learning the bass guitar music for this song, and it ain't easy. The intro is a bugger to do in tempo.

Take a look at the bold parts and tell me what you see...

first off, I'm a BIG Rush fan, so thanks for posting this!

I always thought the message of this song was one of Toleration, Work, and Persistence. "the impulse is pure, sometimes our circuits get shorted" makes me think of the DeMolay degree obligation... "...will give them the benefit of the doubt, realizing that they may be actuated by worthy motives unknown to me, and that under the same circumstances I might have acted even more unwisely than I judge them to have acted."

I think my favorite part has always been the bit "Courageous convictions will drag the dream into existence." even before I became a mason, I felt this meant that so long as we set to work with good and wholesome instruction and practice perseverence, we will be headed in the right direction.

Yep!

The entire song addresses things that deal with the EA Work. Those that have done the EA Work would sense this; those who have done the FC would be able to underswtand how the lyrics convey and express this.
