Where did the flies come from?

My wife got a lovely bouquet of flowers from our daughter on her birthday last week. It was delivered by a local florist and immediately put in a vase with water and the liquid feed supplied. A few days later when she picked up the vase to change the water, a cloud of tiny flies rose from the flowers. We haven't had particularly warm weather so have had doors and windows closed so where did they come from?

From the flowers

They were probably brought in with the flowers. I am going to guess that they were fruit fly's. This year was a very bad year for flies with numbers far above what they normally are. No really explanation though.

Yes they sound like fruit flies to me also. It's strange but every time my husband has a bourbon and coke in the evening, one of these little blighters always ends up swimming around in it! They seem to come from nowhere but I have read that they lay eggs on any decaying vegetable or fruit matter and they are so small they are around all the time.
