Are the teachings of Freemasonry simply Socioeconomic Pragmatism?

The teaching of freemasonry are basic common precepts in the world. These thoughts and practices have been around for a very long time, and are all too often forgotten in today's society. The basics of tempering ones desires with their needs, and do unto others as you would have done by do not seem to carry over in today's helter skelter world. These are principles in life that all men and mankind should live by. To square our actions and live within due bounds so that mankind can learn from the examples set forth by the Masonic Fraternity.

Interesting question. Often I wonder what there is in Masonic teachings that my mother didn't try to teach me as a child. So much of it seems so obvious, whether one tries to live by the Golden Rule, the Silver Rule (which I prefer) or just to treat other right.
