DAYTONA BEACH -- A couple of big questions are rumbling through local tourism circles: Can Daytona Beach handle a convention of 20,000 Shriners in 2017, and should the city and county even try?
Don Poor, the man who runs the Ocean Center, answers yes to both questions. Frank Bruno, the chair of the Volusia County Council, does the same. Other Council members lament the lack of communication early in the process, and say it's time for the Ocean Center to aggressively pursue these types of opportunities.
But all acknowledge the concerns of hotel owners and others who say it's too much, too soon, and would eat up thousands of hotel rooms during the peak summer season.
