While the North is seen as a place of darkness in Masonic symbolism, my Lodge has done something with it that I think is pretty sublimely cool.
You see, we are a very old Lodge. Consecrated in 1847, with the Lodge we merged with being consecrated in 1915, little time goes by without us hearing of a death somewhere amongst the brethren. Our charter is essentially always draped.
However, the thought was at the start of this past year that something else should be done. So, we came up with the idea of having a chair in the North, that symbolic Masonic place of darkness, permanently dedicated to those who've gone before. If there any Ohio brethren reading this, take a look at this month's Beacon, we are in there. Now, on one of those ancient orange chairs that are older than any of our members can remember, there are two things. One is a white lambskin apron, and the other is a simple plaque.
The plaque reads as follows: This chair is dedicated to the memory of our Masonic Brothers who have passed on to the Celestial Lodge above, the house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. February 14, 2011, Toledo-Fort Industry Lodge, #144.
I like it. Fairly simple, but a permanent reminder of those who've gone beyond and those who are left here to remember them.
