ROCKWELL CITY - Christmas will be merrier for 40 Calhoun County children this year because of the generosity of the Twin Lakes Masonic Lodge No. 478 and the Grand Lodge of Iowa A.F. & A.M.
This is the fifth year the Masons have purchased gifts, a service project they began in 2005 with just $500 to work with. Each year since 2007, they have received matching funds from the Grand Lodge of Iowa, allowing the group to shop for more children. Prior to buying gifts, the organization presented two $250 scholarships to local high school graduates.
"We wanted to do something different with that money," said Lodge Member Harold Barkley. "By changing what we did with it, we were able to double our funds. We weren't able to match the scholarship funds, but we can match something like this."
