Thanks to the "National Treasure" films and the writings of Dan Brown, public attention to and curiosity about the Freemasons has mushroomed (along with a fair amount of rumor and misinformation, of course) in recent times.
Many of the great American leaders have been members of the order, including Benjamin Franklin and George Washington. The Masons are especially pleased about the latter, and have erected a Washington Masonic Memorial in Alexandria, VA., which is open to the public free of charge.
