Canadian scientists say they found the place in the human brain that basically allows some blind people to channel their inner bat and "see like a bat."
Some blind people are able to echolocate like bats do by making clicking noises and then listening to the echoes that return to them.
Scientists have long known that both bats and dolphins echolocate. In addition, scientists were aware that some blind people echolocate in order to navigate their way around cities, and pedal around on a bicycle and play sports.
But until now, scientists did not understand the process.
Scientists recorded two blind people using echolocation. Then they put them in MRI machines, played the recordings back to them through headphones and used the MRI to record the brain activity of two blind people listening to the audio recordings made when they were echolocating.
