The aprons that out Brothers in the 1700s were not all leather either, there is one at the George Washington Masonic memorial that is original and it looks like silk.

The newly initiated apprentice is not presented with a silk or leather-like apron. He is presented with an apron fashioned from the actual skin of the animal most often used to represent innocence and purity, to be worn as a badge that marks him as a member of our Order. It is an actual metaphysical act. This is the basis of my distaste of aprons that are not actual lambskin.

Just wanted to clarify why I don't like cloth aprons! LoL
My personal (Sunday go to Lodge apron) is leather, so I get it. It was interesting that the aprons they have at the GWMM from that period were all silk. Could be that the leather ones all went with their owners to the grave.....

I think the leather ones, if they were well used, would not have survived like the silk ones. The leather would have decomposed more readily than the silk.
